NEWS RELEASE:

Are pollinators in peril?

The Buckeye Central seventh-grade students are taking action against diminishing pollinator populations by collecting milkweed seed pods.

The Ohio Pollinator Habitat Initiative (OPHI) and Buckeye Central Middle School are partnering again this year as the exclusive collection site for common milkweed seed pods in Crawford County. The seventh graders have produced educational videos to teach residents how to identify and collect these important seeds.

If you see common milkweed seed pods that are turning brown or tan, please collect them and deposit them in the OPHI green and yellow bin at Buckeye Central’s front office doors.

Collection will take place until the end of October. Seeds will be sorted and distributed to residents and roadside crews across the state of Ohio to increase Monarch butterfly habitats and foster increases in pollinator populations in general.

For questions, contact any BC seventh-grade student or science teacher Mrs. Marianne Williamson at mwilliamson@bcbucks.org.  To view the student-created educational videos visit the BC webpage at http://www.buckeye-central.k12.oh.us/.
