Press release and staff report

The Crawford Park District is looking for volunteers to help plant wetland plants at Heckert Nature Preserve this Sunday.

A contractor is finishing up a Nature Conservancy Grant project for the Crawford Park District and the final step is to plant wetland-related flora. Volunteers will join MAD Scientist Associates and park district workers in completing the wetland creation project by planting over 2,000 native wetland and prairie plugs, as well as several shrubs.

The wetland complex will filter excess nutrients from farm runoff before it reaches the headwaters of the Olentangy River, located near the preserve.

MAD Scientist Associates will provide tools for planting. No experience is necessary. Volunteers should dress in clothes they don’t mind getting wet or muddy and are advised to bring work gloves. Water and snacks will also be provided.

The planting project will start at noon on June 11 at Heckert Nature Preserve, 1601 Ohio 19, Bucyrus.
