Philanthropic endeavors and community service are important values that young people need to learn. Fifth grade students from Galion Intermediate School took on several fundraising projects throughout the 2016-2017, with the largest project being to raise money for the Humane Society Serving Crawford County.

Forty fifth grade students presented a $1,600 check to the Humane Society May 23. The presentation was the culmination of a unique program the students developed, which allowed students at the Intermediate School to “dress down” in jeans or Galion spirit wear the first and third Friday of each month.

“I am very proud of the students for undertaking this yearlong project,” said Intermediate School Principal Alex Sharick. “It was great seeing the entire school supporting the fifth-grade project.”

The majority of the funds donated to the Humane Society are being used to build an outdoor dog adoption area at the Humane Society’s facility. The area will include a plaque recognizing the 2016-2017 fifth grade class.

“The generosity of these students is incredible,” said Humane Society Executive Director Victoria Carmean. “This donation was so large that we are able to use some of the funds for equipment repairs and replacement, along with creating the outdoor dog adoption area. Thank you to the Galion fifth grade students for giving back to the community and the Humane Society serving Crawford County.”

The fifth grade also conducted a fundraiser to collect socks for the homeless this school year. This was the second year for the “Sock-tober” fundraiser, and the students collected more than 1,000 pairs of socks.

“This group of students is incredible because they have a ‘givers heart’, which starts at home,” said Superintendent Jim Grubbs. “I need to not only thank our teachers for cultivating a spirit of giving in their classrooms, but I also need to thank the parents of these fifth-grade students for encouraging these young people to look beyond themselves and help others.”
