Press release
Galion Middle School sixth and eighth grade students will have the opportunity to experience nature and our nation’s capital. Sixth grade students will attend the Mohican Outdoor School May 24 through May 26, while eighth grade students will visit Washington, DC May 23 through May 25.
The itinerary for the eighth-grade trip includes many stops at various historical sites while traveling toward Washington, DC. The students will have the opportunity to tour the Gettysburg Battlefield before visiting the World War II, Lincoln, Vietnam War and Korean War monuments.
“Our students are excited to have the opportunity to learn about the history that helped shape the United States,” said Middle School Principal Joe Morabito. “This is becoming a highlight for our eighth graders, and we are very pleased to offer them the opportunity to visit our nation’s capital.”
Sixth graders will travel to Butler, OH to attend the Mohican Outdoor School. Students will have the opportunity to engage in aquatic studies, ecology, a compass challenge and wilderness survival.
“The Mohican Outdoor School is a great place for our students to learn new things not normally taught in the classroom,” said Morabito. “We’re excited to hear the students’ stories about the many things they learn at Mohican.”
While these types of extended learning opportunities provide new experiences for students, there is a cost associated with these trips. This year, several individuals and organizations contributed funds to award grants to students for these trips.
“To be considered for a grant, students were required to complete an online application,” said Morabito. “Once we closed the application window, students were selected based on their answers to questions that focused on character, their academic standing and their ideas for how they can ‘pay it forward’ in the future.”
The Ohio Civil Service Employees Association/American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees donated more than $3,000 to help fund grants for students through their annual holiday party. The Galion Boosters Club provided financial assistance to help fund grants, and the Community Foundation for Crawford County also provided a grant for sixth grade students to attend The Mohican Outdoor School.
Individual community members also contributed to the grant program by funding 10 seats for the Washington, DC trip. Ruth Flick, Gary Flick, Mike Flick, Erik Flick and Bob Napier all provided support for the students.
“It is amazing the support we received for the student field trip grant program,” said Superintendent Jim Grubbs. “I would like to thank the organizations and individuals for their support for these student field trips and the student grant program. This type of community support is what makes Galion a great place. I’m proud to be a Tiger!”
