Under Monday’s warm and welcoming skies the Bucyrus community took time from the first holiday of the summer to remember those whose sacrifice cannot be repaid. The annual Memorial Day Parade and service at Oakwood Cemetery paid homage to those who have served and fallen.

The guest speaker for the day was Colonel Crawford graduate and Master Sergeant Laurie Heinle. Heinle recalled sharing a flight with the remains of a fallen Marine.

“As I sat there my motherly instincts kicked in and I couldn’t help but think this fallen soldier’s mother was about to receive the worst news of her life in just a few short hours,” Heinle said. “During that flight I thought about that soldier’s life. What were his final moments like? And what would have become of him if he had lived? Those questions will never be answered.”

Boyd Long served as Master of Ceremonies with the traditional Taps played by Bucyrus High School Band members Kaleigh Seiber and Austin Edgington.

Jacob Bloomfield had the honor of reciting General Logan’s General Order No. 11 and the Gettysburg Address was presented by Catherine Pojman.

The services were broadcast live on Country Legends 92.3FM and 1540AM WBCO.
