The Galion City School District Board of Education approved the Gateway to Technology curriculum, a program of Project Lead the Way, for the Middle School during the regular meeting March 22.

Project Lead the Way is a national nonprofit organization that partners with middle schools and high schools to implement a curriculum, developed by it and inspired by teachers whom PLTW has trained, that emphasizes hands-on experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and biomedical sciences in an effort to prepare students for academic and professional success in these disciplines.

“We’re adopting this curriculum because PLTW’s mission is to ensure that the United States succeeds in the increasingly high-tech and high-skill global economy,” Superintendent Jim Grubbs said. “One of my big initiatives when I started as Superintendent was to develop a stronger STEM curriculum for our students, and this is the lead-in for future course offerings to help students experience educational and professional success.”

The new curriculum will be implemented during the 2016-2017 school year. Visit www.pltw.org to learn more about the Gateway to Technology curriculum and Project Lead the Way.

During his report, Mr. Grubbs provided an update on the press box construction project. He informed the board members that all bids for the project came in $80,000 over the architect’s estimates.

“We will be meeting with all the stakeholders involved in the press box project in the very near future,” Grubbs said. “We’re hopeful that we can find a solution for our press box needs that satisfies all involved parties.”

In other action, the Board of Education approved all agenda items as they were presented, including a $150 donation for children in need at the Primary School. The board adjourned to executive session with no additional action taken following the session.

The next Board of Education meeting will be a special meeting and work session April 7. The next regular Board of Education meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Galion Middle School Computer Lab April 21.
