GALION, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Galion Head Football Coach Matt Dick has been named the October Coach of the Month from Lewis Family McDonald’s, recognizing his dedication to the program and the impact he has made on his athletes.

Dick has coached for 21 years, this being his 11th year as a head coach. Before Galion, he spent time coaching at Madison as well as Fredericktown. He says his biggest coaching accomplishment is the impact on kids’ lives.

“Just building those relationships with kids and trying to make them better men, I think that’s what’s really important,” says Dick. “I think the relationships with kids, with coaches, with families, all that I think is probably my biggest accomplishment,” said Dick.

He says one of the most rewarding parts of coaching is watching his athletes grow and develop, both on and off the field, throughout their years in the program.

“You can see a lot of changes in how they communicate with people, how they stand up straight, how they act, how they say thank you. Just all those different things that you just see come to life, and they basically become completely different people, and then hopefully you see that down the road at a job or hopefully in Galion,” says Dick.

Dick says that what makes coaching at Galion so special to him is that he is all in.

“I’m really all in. You know my five kids go to Galion City Schools, I work at Galion City Schools, my wife works at Galion City Schools, we live in Galion City Schools, so when you’re all in on something there’s really no hesitation,” said Dick. “I’m putting my heart and soul into trying to make an impact on Galion community.”

Dick says that it’s an honor to coach for Galion and to be able to represent the community.

“When you’re more invested, you just meet the people, and you know the faces. I know a lot of people that are in the stands, a lot of people in the community, and I just think that I always want to represent them in the right way, and I want our kids to represent the community in the right way, and when we do that, it’s really rewarding,” says Dick.
