A former Crestline chief of police and one-time candidate to be mayor of the village died last week as a result of a brief illness.
Seventy-four-year-old Joe Dowell died in Columbus. A Virginia native, Dowell moved here while still in school and graduated from Crestline High School in 1962.
Dowell became a police officer for the Crestline Police Department in 1968 and served as the department’s chief of police from 1977 until his retirement in 1994.
In 2015, Dowell ran unsuccessfully for the office of village mayor.
