HOLMES TOWNSHIP (Crawford County Now) — Wynford used its retro act of a strong rushing attack to snap a two-game losing streak and beat Buckeye Central 41-6 in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference game Friday night.

The Royals (1-1, 2-2) ran for 492 yards and 6 touchdowns, led by Deegan Lutz with 246 yards and Braylon Wells with 209.

“We came out and were physical tonight,” first-year head coach Andy Amlin said. “We lacked focus the last 2 weeks and I thought we had that. I thought we executed offensively a lot better than we had.”

The hosts took a 14-0 lead thanks to Wells’ 2-yard burst and Lutz’s 18-yard run in the first quarter.

Wells then ripped off a 63-yard touchdown with 5:18 left in the first half for a 3-score margin.

Things took a solemn turn when BC’s Collin Perry was injured in a midfield collision on a punt return with under 2 minutes left in the half. He was taken from the field by Bucyrus ambulance after a 15-minute delay.

“We love Collin. The kid plays hard and wants to win. He’s played a lot of football and we’re just all praying that he’s OK,” said Bucks head coach Jordan Phillips.

After the injury delay, Buckeye scored on an Owen Hatten 16-yard scamper down the left sideline for its only touchdown with 6.1 seconds in the first half.

Jackson Earnest’s interception led to the 6-play, 53-yard drive. Austin Bogner ripped off runs of 10 and 12 yards and Louie Rietschlin caught a 14-yard pass.

“They really came off the ball, on both sides, harder than us and faster than us,” Phillips said. “It’s something we’re going to need to improve on.”

Buckeye Central (0-2, 1-3) was held to 144 total offensive yards.

The Royals added two more scores in the third quarter when Lutz ran in from 31 yards out and Wells added a 3-yard run.

“We rely on Braylon and Deegan a lot and if we can get those two in space, they can do some things. We had some difficulty the last 2 weeks doing that. “I’m really proud of the kids. Deegan did a great job leading us today and his energy is really good for us,” Amlin said.

“Our heads went down there for a second when they scored, but we came right out in the second half and didn’t let it affect us. Any win is good; 2-2 is good for us right now. I think we beat the 2 teams we should have beat. But the teams we lost to were just better than us those nights.”

Bucyrus (2-2) visits Buckeye Central and Wynford travels to unbeaten Hopewell-Loudon (4-0) next Friday night.

“Next week is going to be a heck of a challenge for us. Obviously, they’re a great football team and they were in the state finals last year. I’ve known coach (Brian) Colatruglio for a while and he’s a really good coach. It’ll be a challenge, but hey, ‘anything worth it isn’t easy,’ they say, right?”

For the Bucks, it’s back to film study and practice.

“During the season you need to see improvement week to week, and we’ve not seen enough of that. Some of that is in practice and some of it is on the field when you see different defenses. It’s an area that is concerning and something we have to fix,” Phillips said.

“There’s good things in this tape. It was a competitive game into the third quarter. We needed a stop and to get the ball back. Then it got away from us late. There’s room for improvement. We’ve got to have a great week of practice and win during the week, not just on Fridays.”
