ONTARIO, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Ontario Police Department is investigating a shooting that left a 3-year-old child injured Wednesday night on the city’s east side.
Officers responded to a residence on Landings Court at approximately 10:20 p.m. following reports that a child had been struck by a bullet. Upon arrival, law enforcement established a perimeter and conducted an extensive search of the area.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department assisted Ontario officers in securing the scene and the surrounding neighborhood.
The child was transported by Springfield Township EMS to OhioHealth Mansfield for treatment. Police said the injuries are considered non-life-threatening.
While the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) assisted with evidence collection at the scene, no weapons were recovered during the initial sweep. Investigators have determined there is no ongoing active threat to the community.
The circumstances surrounding the discharge of the weapon remain unclear. As of Thursday morning, no charges have been filed. Investigators continue to process evidence and interview witnesses.
