Colonel Crawford became the latest local school to follow suit in allowing in-district home-school students to participate in school extracurricular activities.

The move by the school board at its meeting on Monday is in compliance with recent changes to the Ohio Revised Code over the objections of the Ohio High School Athletics Association. Prior to the student being allowed to participate he or she will have to receive approval by the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA).

Superintendent Todd Martin explained.

“You still have to meet five credits to get five credits for eligibility. It is going to be interesting working through it,” Martin said. “We worded our policy to say as approved by the Ohio High School Association. So it kind of puts the burden on them to approve the OK.”

Colonel Crawford board approved joining Bucyrus, Galion and Crestline by chipping in $12,000 to go towards student transportation to the Tomorrow Center. The move is done to split the estimated $47,000 total that would be charged to each school if they were to provide their own transportation, drivers, and aides to the center.

It is estimated that Colonel Crawford will save $2,100 by renewing their maintenance agreements with Guenther Mechanical, Mcquay International (Chiller), and Wadsworth Slawson (HVAC). Martin revealed during the board meeting that Guenther Mechanical had dropped their fees by $2,300 charging Colonel Crawford $5,206 for service through the 2013/2014 school year.

Multiple staff contracts were approved Monday night, including the hire of former part time technology support employee Greg Flannigan to full-time.
