NEW WASHINGTON, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The community of New Washington is in mourning this week following the passing of former Mayor Ben Lash, who died on April 4, 2025, after a brief illness. Lash, a beloved figure in the village, was 76 years old.

Born on May 26, 1948, in Galion, Ohio, to Donald and Nadine Lash, Ben Lash dedicated his life to service, education, and fostering connections with those around him. His life was characterized by a deep sense of compassion and an unwavering commitment to his community.

Lash’s impact on New Washington is profound. He served as the Mayor from 2011 until his passing, guiding the village with dedication and a genuine care for its residents. Prior to his time in office, Lash devoted over 30 years to St. Bernard’s Catholic School in New Washington, where he served as principal. His influence extended far beyond administrative duties, shaping the lives of countless students as a role model, mentor, and a constant source of support. His personal motto, “Do the right thing at the right time to the best of your ability,” resonated with students and guided his approach to education.

Beyond the classroom, Lash was a passionate coach, beginning his coaching career at the young age of 16. He coached basketball at various levels and girls high school softball, leaving a lasting impact on young athletes in the area. His love for guiding others extended to unique educational trips he organized for his 8th-grade students, most notably to New York City. This passion for travel and sharing experiences led him to establish a business organizing similar trips for others.

Family was at the heart of Ben Lash’s life. He is survived by his wife of over five decades, Suzanne, whom he met as a teenager. Together they raised three children: Michelle (Brad Geissman), John (Allyson Marx), and Melissa. His greatest joys were his nine grandchildren: Molly, Graham, Casey, and Elliot Geissman; Simon, Wyatt, and Archie Lash; and Trey and Zeeke Taylor. He also leaves behind his beloved dog Riley.

Lash was also a devoted fan of Ohio sports teams, passionately supporting the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers, and Guardians. His legendary tailgates with his brothers were a testament to his love for community and camaraderie.

Ben Lash’s ability to connect with people was remarkable. He was known for his infectious enthusiasm, genuine kindness, and the way he made everyone feel welcome. He leaves behind a legacy of service, mentorship, and a deep love for his family and community.

Calling hours for Ben Lash will be held in the St. Bernard School gymnasium on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. His funeral mass will be held at St. Bernard Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place at a later date.
