Family Survival
The Crawford Park District will be holding a family survival backpack challenge twice this month on Oct. 4 and 24 at Lowe-Volk Park. Families will be given a backpack with all the supplies they will need to complete various challenges, such as making a fishing pole, setting a trap with rocks and sticks, and starting a fire with flint and steel.

Registration for the first survival event ends Oct. 2 but registration will be open for the Oct. 24 challenge until Oct. 23. Call the Crawford Park District at 419-683-9000 to register or to get more information.

“When I was younger and worked at the Haunted Prison Reformatory Experience right out of high school that was one of the most fun jobs I had. It’s Halloween; it’s a haunted house. C’mon, what else is there to say?” – Bob

zombie walk 2014Bucyrus Zombie Walk
No, the zombie plague didn’t suddenly hit Bucyrus, nor did The Walking Dead or Fear the Walking Dead suddenly switch filming locations to our little county. Rather, it’s the annual Bucyrus Zombie Walk. This will be the third year for zombies to stumble down Sandusky Avenue in all their goriness.

This year’s Zombie Walk takes place on Oct. 17 and includes a Scavenger Hunt. For more information visit facebook.com/BucyrusZombieWalk or stop by the MB Subculture store in Bucyrus.

Halloween Family Fun Night
This is a family-friendly (if you can’t tell by the title) event hosted by the Crawford Park District each year. Kids and parents can come dressed up in costumes and enjoy a bonfire, face painting, movies, wagon rides, and even treat bags. Haunted hikes – and non-haunted hikes for the easily scared tykes – are available, though families should bring flashlights.

The Halloween Family Fun Night takes place from 7 – 9 p.m. on Oct. 17 at Lowe-Volk Park. For more information contact the Crawford Park District at 419-683-9000 or visit www.crawfordparkdistrict.org.

spooktacular 2014Spooktacular
Spooktacular is an annual event held in Bucyrus and hosted by the Bucyrus Fire Department. Though usually held in front of the historic firehouse on East Mansfield Street, the event is moving to Aumiller Park this year in order to spread out and allow for more family-friendly activities, like a whiffle ball tournament, a pumpkin decorating contest, and corn hole.

Spooktacular will take place from 5 – 8 p.m. on Oct. 24. October 31 is currently set aside as a rain date.

“Spooktacular is such a fun event to be at, not only to see kids in a safe place getting candy stuffed in every available bucket and pocket but also to see how the community turns out to support the event. The Fire Department has done an excellent job.” – Krystal

District cross country meets
If you enjoy watching kids compete or just like long distance running, Galion’s Amann’s Reservoir is the place to be Oct. 24. The district cross country races are there and all six Crawford County schools will be competing.

“One of the most exciting and enjoyable cross country meets of the year. Amann’s is without question one of the top courses for spectators to watch the races. Some of the kids are running to qualify for regionals while for others it is their final opportunity to record their best times. And for some, it’s the final race of their careers.” – Gary

Murder Mystery Clue
Did someone say murder? Brownella Cottage is hosting a live-action version of Clue! but with a twist: it’s a murder mystery. A cast of characters and suspects will be lurking around the Cottage as visitors determine who did it, what was used to commit the crime, and in what room the murder took place. Did we mention it all has to be done in the dark with flashlights?

There are two more chances to play: on Oct. 24 and 30. Sessions begin at 7 p.m. and the cost is $10 per person. Call the Galion Historical Society at 419-468-9338 to reserve a spot.

Trick-or-Treat
We can’t forget about all the trick-or-treat events! Right now the only dates we have are from 2 – 4 p.m. on Oct. 25 in Galion and Crestline and from 6 – 8 p.m. on Oct. 29 in Bucyrus. Stay tuned for more.

Copper Kettle Game
It doesn’t matter where these two teams are at in the standings: if the Copper Kettle is on the line, it’s going to be an interesting game. Whether it’s a complete mud bowl like last year or a down to the wire game in 2013, the Royals and the Redmen will battle it out.

This year the game will be on the Royals’ home turf. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. on Oct. 30. Just in time for Halloween.
