The final curtain is fast approaching for the Schines Theatre in downtown Bucyrus, but opening night is that much closer for the Schines Art Park.
The Bucyrus City Board of Control opened six bids for the Schines Theatre demolition project Wednesday morning. With the city estimating the cost of demolition and asbestos abatement at $400,000, one company seemed to hit the target.
Two of the bids for demolition and asbestos came from Moderalli Excavating of Poland, Ohio and D&R Demolition of Archbold, Ohio. Moderalli Excavating came in with the lowest bids at $397,700 while D&R Demolition submitted a $513,000 bid.
The two companies also submitted bids for general demolition. D&R Demolition came in at $274,000 and Moderalli Excavating submitted a bid of $299,700. B&B Wrecking and Excavating of Cleveland entered a general demolition bid of $164,700.
Safeco Environmental Services was the lone company to send in a bid for asbestos only. That bid was $619,501.
“(This) moves the city that much closer to the theater coming down,” noted Dale Hartle, president of Ohio Rural Development Corporation.
The Board of Control will review and calculate the submissions before awarding the bid. The city must also await final paperwork on a state grant before it can sign a bid contract.
A Board of Control meeting has been scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Thursday to award the Schines Theatre demolition contract.
