GALION — Galion’s rushing attack was one that Upper Sandusky had no shot at slowing down on Friday night.
The Tigers totaled 451 yards on the ground on their way to a 41-6 victory over the Rams. Gabe Ivy was only going to be limited for so many games this season and he broke out in a big way in Week 3.
Galion’s senior running back ran for 372 yards, which is a new individual school record. Even more impressive, the Tigers did most of their work through just three-quarters of play.
“He hasn’t seen that all year,” Galion head coach Matt Dick explained. “We put a lot of time into it. We have a great O-line coach in Ryan Scribner and (Taylor) Sabo has cleaned up some of those kickouts.”
Ivy ran tough all night, but he was often 10 yards downfield before he was touched and that is a testament to the entire offensive line anchored by seniors Holden Hunter, Alex Griffith, and Landon Campbell as a blocking tight end.
Galion (3-0) struck first on a four-yard touchdown run from junior quarterback Braxton Prosser. Just a few minutes later, Ivy broke off his first of four touchdowns on a 50-yard sprint.
It was the second quarter where the Tigers asserted their dominance. Just 10 seconds into the quarter, Ivy was again off and running for six from 43 yards out this time.
“O-line started to click, got to be a lot more gap sound. I think the first power play we called, Gabe (Ivy) housed it,” said Dick.
The Tigers caught Upper Sandusky (1-2) off guard with an onside kick, which resulted in another Ivy score just three minutes later. This one was from four yards out right up the middle.
After another defensive stop, Galion again hit pay dirt. Prosser took what looked to be a broken play and found a crease up the right sideline for a 19-yard score.
Just before the half, the Rams were able to get on the board after Kaden Holman connected on a deep pass, then punched it in from two yards out with under a minute until the break.
Holman would finish 17-of-25 passing for 186 yards through the air. The Rams’ senior was their punter, played safety, and was back there for kick returns.
“Tonight, we proved that if you just pass, or just run, that we’re pretty good at defense,” Dick said.
The Tigers faced two teams to open the season that wanted to run the ball. Week 3 was a bit different with a team that wanted to spread it out and throw it around.
At the 3:44 mark of the third quarter, Ivy found the end zone again from 27 yards to force the running clock for the remainder of the game.
Both teams inserted backups into the game early in the fourth quarter.
“It was cool to get those JV guys and freshmen guys in, they love to get those reps,” Dick said. “I can’t tell you how proud I am of our scout team. We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores mixed into our scout team that are just giving us an incredible look in practice.”
Allowing just six points was the Galion defense which made life tough for Holman in Week 3. A slew of Tigers were able to sack the quarterback including Linkon Tyrrell, Jimmy Hardy, Hunter Miniard, Carson Frankhouse, and Campbell.
Galion attempted just three passes on the night and that goes to show how well the run game was working.
Upper Sandusky will look to get right at home in Week 4 when they host Seneca East, who will come in at 1-2 as well.
Next up for Galion is last year’s Mid-Ohio Athletic champions, Clear Fork. The Colts are 1-2 after a 28-27 loss to Lexington in Week 3. Clear Fork defeated Lucas in overtime in Week 1, then lost to Granville the following week.
“Every team in the MOAC is special in their way, Clear Fork has been special for a long time. It will be weird playing without Dave Carroll, but Aaron Brokaw is a great coach in his own right. We’ll go back to the drawing board and try to prepare for them.”
