Wynford elementary teachers and K through 6 students presented a preview of the “Leader in Me” program to the district’s Board of Education Monday night.

Students explained the seven leader habits verbally and visually through drawings. Teachers made a Power Point presentation explaining the process to prepare for the “Leader in Me” program which begins next school year.

During the Power Point the staff explained that 81 percent of the staff took part in a “Leader in Me” book study. After the study was complete the teachers then received a survey of their opinions of the study. The staff then unfurled their first year plan for the Leader in Me program.

For the final portion of the presentation a video was shown of students explaining what a leader means to them and how they show leadership skills through the seven habits.

Superintendent Steve Mohr explained that the presentation was a vision of what is to come in the district.

Wynford Superintendent Steve Mohr 1“I think this is kind of a taste of what is to come. What occurred tonight was kind of a preliminary work that our staff did before deciding whether our staff wanted to do it and you saw kindergarteners through sixth grade just do an outstanding job in a public presentation,” Mohr said. “I thought they did a really great job and I am excited about the changes that will occur, not only within that building, but I think within the whole district when we move to this.”

Treasurer Leesa Smith’s report to the board included an update on the state’s biennium budget. In her report Smith noted that the House added a provision to HB 68 that schools will retain the same level of funding from the past year. Originally Wynford was set to lose $90,000 per year under the new budget. Smith noted that that budget still has to go through the Senate before passage.

Board members approved all personnel items on the agenda Monday night. Among items approved were the retirements of elementary teachers Lynn Fisher, and Joyce Klamfoth. Both were commended by the board for an outstanding job and were wished the best of luck in their retirement.

The board also approved all operational items on the agenda. Included in the operational items was the 2015/2016 school year calendar. Wynford’s new school calendar will allow for five calamity days. After those days are used there will be set make-up days the use of Blizzard Bag days will be limited to three.
