BUCYRUS–With the end of the 2022-2023 school year approaching quickly, end-of-year festivities are starting to take off.

For Wynford, they added something new this year to celebrate their seniors – Signing Day.

“I’ve had signing days at two of the previous districts I worked in as High School Principal. Marion Harding and Tiffin Columbian both had them where I was principal. It’s something that I learned from Gary Barber, the Superintendent I worked for at both stops,” Superintendent Forrest Trisler said. “Signing Day is awesome! It’s a way to show your community and stakeholders that our seniors are ready for graduation. They have gained acceptance to a 2 or 4-year college, an apprenticeship or career/technical education, or have enlisted in the US Armed Forces or have been accepted to employment in a high quality, in-demand job. High School Principal Julie Miller, and High School Counselor, Shelli Ashley, led putting our signing day together, enlisting tech help from Dustin Tesso and Nicole Pelter and the voice of Wynford, Mr. Jason Chandler! They all did a fantastic job making this a very special day for our seniors and the community.”

Wynford’s version of signing day included all middle and high school students in the gym to watch seniors file in two by two to the other end of the gym, have their name and after-school destination announced as they are followed with a spotlight, and sign an official paper to solidify their plans after everyone has been seated at the table designated for the different colleges/workplaces/destinations.

“I think the first signing day was a success! Our goal was to make every senior feel celebrated for their commitment to either furthering their education, pursuing their careers, or joining the military. Mr. Trisler had this idea from the beginning of the school year, and we just ran with it and made it our own. We wanted it to be exciting, and I think we accomplished that for a great group of seniors,” High school guidance counselor Shelli Ashley said.

Trisler said he felt the event was important because it helps to set a focus and expectation on gaining Diploma Plus Acceptance for not only seniors but all students—it is the culminating event that helps schools create a positive culture for career and college readiness.

“I’m really proud of our school staff, board of education, and students that they are embracing the district’s vision for Diploma Plus Acceptance and that we are improving our focus and setting a laser-like, positive expectation for students on career and college readiness with acceptance. As a school district, we want all our kids to graduate and walk across the stage with their diploma in one hand and acceptance to their next stage of life in the other, whether it is college, apprenticeship or career tech certification, enlistment in the military, or acceptance into the workforce in an in-demand, high-quality job in Crawford County,” Trisler said.

Wynford’s graduation is Saturday, May 20, at 8 p.m. at the football stadium if the weather cooperates. If not, it will be held in the new gym.
