Bucyrus Area YMCA Chief Executive Officer Nate Smith has a message for the community: “We don’t want anyone who wants to be here not to be here.”

To help make that happen the Y is currently in the midst of its annual campaign. Funds raised from that campaign go exclusively to helping with the costs of Y memberships for kids, families and seniors.

“The Y wants to be accessible to everyone,” Smith said, “no matter their income level.”

Though the fund-raising campaign will take place over the next couple of weeks, the distribution of the money through aid for Y memberships takes place all year round. Last year the Bucyrus Y made $35,000 available to aid with 500 memberships. There are no 100-percent discount memberships and the aid is distributed based on an individual’s or family’s particular situation. Those interested in a membership discount need only to contact the YMCA and complete a minimal amount of paperwork.

“Our target goal (for the annual campaign) is $20,000,” Smith said. “It is the one fundraising event a year that we have. It is the one time we ask folks to help us. One hundred-percent of the gift does go to the financial assistance program.”

Gifts to the Y’s annual campaign are tax deductible. Smith said financial gifts come in all amounts from individuals, corporations and businesses.

“Honestly, it is a mixture,” Smith said.
