Spring is just around the corner – hopefully – and swim suits are already appearing in the stores. As much as we look forward to sunshine and warm weather, though, the thought of fitting our winter bodies – with that extra padding – into swim suits is a bit daunting.

So, what is the best way to start getting our bodies summer-ready? Diet and exercise are the two obvious answers, but let’s get a bit more specific. Cutting calories is a good place to start, but people often think that they must deprive themselves of food in order for this to be effective. According to WebMD, increasing the amount of protein in your diet – by eating foods like nuts, fish, and eggs – will help you feel full and keep you from consuming as many calories as you might with foods that are heavy in carbohydrates. Watching your fiber and salt intakes is also key. Increasing fiber and decreasing salt consumption will both help reduce bloating – a quick way to start getting ready for beachwear.

While a well-rounded workout routine is best to maintain your optimal weight and overall health, there are some specific exercises you can do to target the areas that have suffered the most during these long winter months. Squats will target your thighs and glutes, while rowing will strengthen and tone your arms and back. Pilates can be a good comprehensive workout, but are particularly beneficial to the back and ab muscles.

Luckily, the YMCA is equipped with the facilities and staff to help you design and execute the perfect workout regimen for you, regardless of whether your goal is simply to look great in your swim suit, lose weight, or improve your overall health. Whether you are a lifelong athlete or have never even stepped onto a treadmill, the YMCA’s personal trainers will work with you to find the right combination of activities to help you achieve your goals and actually have fun in the process!
