America has been called the cultural “melting pot.” Second grade students in Cindy Conner’s class had a chance to experience a little piece of culture during International Day.

The purpose of International Day was to show students examples of how food needs are met in various cultures. Students had been studying cultures and learning how needs are met around the world.

“We had been looking at human needs and then began studying how those needs are met around the world,” Conner said. “We ended our study with the need for food, and discussed how crops grow better in some parts of the world and how we import and export food to get what we need.”

Students made personal flags and wrote about the symbols and colors they chose for their flag. They also utilized online resources and researched different clothing worn around the world. Students also had the opportunity to sample foods from Italy, Germany, China, Greece, Cuba, Mexico, and New Zealand.

“This is the first year I have held International Day,” Conner said. “I think this was a great experience for the students to try some new foods and appreciate the ‘melting pot’ that America is.”
