BUCYRUS — Wynford came into its rivalry game with Bucyrus leading the Northern 10 Athletic Conference in 3-point shooting percentage.

The Royals may not have enhanced that part of their game, but the rest of the offense is just fine.

Wynford 46 points in the first half, then rolled to an 84-56 win over the Redmen at Alex Kish Memorial Gymnasium.

Five Royals reached double figures, with Cainen Allen and Sam McMillan sharing the lead with 17 points each. Wynford coach Mike Smith was not surprised.

“We’ve got three guys on the season scoring double figures and we’ve got two others that are close,” Smith said. “So, that’s what we expect. That’s the way we run our offense — equal opportunity for everybody to shoot the basketball.

“We don’t run any sets. It’s just motion offense,” he added. “I think it works for us. We have really good shooters.”

Wynford (4-2, 2-1 N10) game right out of the gate shooting 50 percent with volume shooting, hitting nine of 18 from the field in the first quarter. The result was a 26-14 Royals’ bulge after one.

“That first quarter — that’s kind of been our problem this season,” Bucyrus coach Scott Gifford said. “I’ve got to figure that out, maybe change some things up in practice. You take away that first quarter, I thought our guys played their hearts out.”

Allen scored nine of his 17 points in the second quarter to help expand the Wynford margin to 46-29 by halftime.

“I said this last year, it’s their Super Bowl when they play Wynford,” Smith said of the Redmen. “I thought we did a good job of putting our foot down right away. I don’t think they were ever in the game.”

The Royals pushed their lead to as many as 30, at 65-35, in the third quarter, and settled for a 65-37 by period’s end. Both teams scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to set the final score.

Malachi Bayless dropped in 17 points to lead Bucyrus. Tyson O’Brien came off the bench to score eight and Noah Burke also had eight despite foul trouble throughout the first half. Kavan Combs grabbed six rebounds.

“We couldn’t guard Malachi off the dribble,” Smith said. “That worried me a little. He split the double team a lot. But that’s going to happen. But we’re still young. People don’t realize, I have one senior who plays a lot, and the rest will be back next year.”

McMillan added 19 rebounds to his 17 points for the Royals who held a 39-27 edge on the glass. Weston Prenger had 16 points, Grant McGuire finished with 15, and Ashton Warren added 11.

“They’re a much-improved team from last year,” Gifford said of the Royals. “They have the (single game) league record for 3s. That was our focus, for them not to get so many 3s. But then they got a lot of back side rebounds.”

“People are going to look at the score,” Smith said. “We gave up (56), which to Bucyrus is a lot since they’ve struggled this year. But the pace of the game is going to give up some of those. It’s just the way we play.”

“One of the positives was they had to call two or three timeouts in the fourth quarter,” Gifford said. “The guys played hard.

“When we got into our offense, our execution was pretty good,” he added. “We had some nice looks at the rim.”

Wynford also won the junior varsity game, 49-38. Sean Brindley led the Royals with 16 points and Anthony Evans added 10. Georgie Floyd had 11 to top Bucyrus and Chris Neale finished with eight.
