NORTH ROBINSON — Colonel Crawford High School hosted its Homecoming game Friday night, and queen Molly Teglovic and king Parker Ketterman were honored.
And the Eagles got off to a quick start on the football field, scoring 28 first-quarter points en route to a 42-7 win over Buckeye Central.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 5-2 in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference and 8-2 overall. But more importantly, Crawford entered the game as the eighth seed in Division VI, Region 22 and stayed there after the win.
It’s not yet official, but, according to computer projections website Joe Eitel, the Eagles should host a first-round playoff game next Friday, probably against No. 9 Margaretta.
Buckeye Central finished the season 0-7 in the conference and 3-7 overall.
Buckeye Central coach Chad Jensen said that his squad knew the Eagles were fast all over the field. But stopping the Eagles is something else.
“(Crawford is) a really good football team,” Jensen said. “They have a lot of speed everywhere; we knew that. We just asked the kids to give the best effort they can, and we did. They bring it every night the best they can. And that’s all we asked for.”
Getting that quick start was critical for Colonel Crawford as well, according to coach Jake Bruner.
“It was important for our seniors and for our team to come out fast,” Bruner said. “We feel that the percentages, if we win, that we will have a home game next week and that was kind of the driving force for our guys. We wanted to come out strong and I think we did.
“We wanted to play a lot of kids tonight; wanted to play our seniors tonight,” he added. “We got a lot of seniors that play a role for us in a little earlier. It’s always good to be at Homecoming against a rival and at home.”
The Eagles moved down the field on their first possession, getting a two-yard run from Tanner Dyer for a 7-0 lead. Two minutes later, Dyer scored on a 15-yard pass from Kam Lohr and Crawford held a 14-0 lead halfway through the quarter.
Lohr found the explosive Trevor Vogt on a 30-yard scoring pass and Matt Clinard scored on a 22-yard run with just 27 seconds left in the quarter.
After one quarter, the Eagles held a 28-0 lead.
Lohr used a forward pass-handoff to Micah Thomas, who sprinted around the right end and dashed 24 yards for the score.
And, when Lohr hit Vogt from 17 yards out, Crawford had an overwhelming 42-0 lead at the half.
“(Buckeye) put a lot of guys in the box, which is what people do and they gave us some things and we took it,” Bruner said. “Trevor (Vogt) is pretty dynamic, obviously, and we have other receivers that are pretty dynamic, and we felt like there were some openings and we took it.”
Buckeye Central got its score early in the fourth period when quarterback Derex Dean hit Stephen Sostakowski from 10 yards out.
Jensen talked to his eight seniors after the game and said that he was pleased with his kids.
“A special group,” Jensen said. “I’ve coached these guys since they were in elementary school, baseball, football, and basketball. I coached them in eighth grade and, when I was on that three-year hiatus and not coaching varsity, this group is one of the reasons I got back into it at the varsity level.
“I just told them I’m proud of them and I love them. And that’s the truth,” he added.
Colonel Crawford played a number of players in the second half, which Bruner wanted to do.
“I think we got almost everyone in tonight,” Bruner said. “We were trying to get a couple of guys in the game, and we didn’t get them in at the last second. But when you’re playing 60 guys that makes you feel pretty good as a coach. We were happy with that.”
Jensen said that his team was competitive all season but added that his team was very good against schools their own size.
“I’m really proud of this group,” Jensen said. “We went 3-1 against Division VII; we went 3-1 against schools our size. And I’m really proud of that. When we play schools our own size we usually win. And I’m very proud of that.”
