BUCYRUS — Shelby repeated as champions of the seven-team Sam Sabback Invitational Tennis Tournament Saturday at Bucyrus High School.

In first singles, Lauren Schoenberger of Upper Sandusky, defeated Galion’s Emma Ross, 8-3, in the final. Pleasant’s Maura Murphy dropped Annie Mahek of Shelby, 8-3, for third place.

Katie Jordan of Pleasant edged Shelby’s McKenna Baker, 8-7, for the second singles title. Korie Meddings of Upper Sandusky defeated Bucyrus’ Addy Young, 8-6.

“It was a beautiful day for tennis and another opportunity to honor Sam,” Bucyrus coach Kris Knodell said. “We had a good crowd and a lot of exciting matches, as always.”

Sabback was a long-time instructor and supporter of tennis in Bucyrus and the surrounding area.

In third singles, Pleasant’s Hannah Miller got by Zada Marquis of Shelby, 8-5. Jocelyn Lehew of Ontario slipped past Galion’s Kadence Fairchild, 8-6, for third place.

Carver and May of Shelby took first doubles with an 8-2 decision over Kurtz and Kurtz of Ontario. Moyer and Rister of Bucyrus captured third place over Miller and Klaiber of Pleasant, 8-2.

Wuchich and Niese of Shelby grabbed the second doubles title, 8-4, over Pleasant’s West and Wenig. Upper Sandusky’s Estes and Kreais got third place, edging Friend and Criss of Ontario, 8-7.

“Once again, we were able to honor Sam Sabback,” tournament director John Supon said. “We appreciate the support we receive from the participants and the Bucyrus administration in organizing this event.”
