CLYDE — The seventh inning walk off hit by Lincolnview’s Addysen Stevens sent her team to the regional finals and Mohawk home in the Division IV regional semifinal at Clyde High School Wednesday night.
Mohawk (21-5) clawed its way back from an early 3-0 deficit, only to fall 5-4 to the Lady Lancers.
“Getting up 3-0 and getting that little cushion was big,” said Lincolnview coach Eric Schwab.
“I think we gave them two runs on two errors that probably shouldn’t have scored. But they kept battling and having fun all year. That’s what it’s about, they’re enjoying the moment.”
Lincolnview (23-4) plays Friday at 5 p.m. against West Unity Hilltop after its 4-3 win earlier over Wayne Trace.
The Lady Lancers went down in order in the first but got a pair in the second on base hits by Taylor Post, Braxton Sherrick, and Zadria King. They added another run in the third when Makayla Jackman walked, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on an infield groundout.
“We obviously didn’t have a good game tonight. It wasn’t our greatest performance. We had huge base running errors that were silly at this level,” Lady Warriors coach Mindy Walton said.
“Our performance … it wasn’t what it should have been.”
Post, a sophomore pitcher, gave up 8 hits, struck out two and walked a Mohawk batter to get the win.
“Taylor has that experience. She took them to the regionals last year,” Schwab said. “She’s a sophomore and has a year under her belt. We’re back here at it and she’s gonna fight every time she’s on that mound.”
Mohawk struck back in the top of the fourth. A double by Alysen Young, her second of the game, started the rally.
Brooklen Helton reached on an infield error. Both scored on a single by Josie Granata that made it 3-2.
“We were pretty evenly matched. I thought it would be defensive errors because that’s what we struggled with. But it’s kind of disappointing to have a couple base running errors that cost us a few runs there,” Walton said.
Mohawk added a solo run in the fifth to knot the game. After the first two hitters got out, a pair of infield errors by Lincolnview kept the door open.
Second baseman A.J. Chevalier drove in Bailey Sheets with the third Mohawk run.
The Lady Lancers added a run in the sixth inning on singles by Andi Webb and King that made it 4-3.
Mohawk went down in order in the sixth but rallied in the seventh to tie the contest at 4-4. A costly double play ended the inning.
“We got a great hit from Lauren Moyer (a triple) there to open the seventh inning. She hadn’t had a hit all night, so it was good to see that from her.”
Mohawk scored again with two outs when Moyer crossed the plate on a single by Chevalier. But two Lady Warriors were left on base after a walk to Young.
The Lady Lancers drove in the winning run with one out on a sharp single by Stevens.
Walton loses four seniors to graduation.
“The amount of experience we have from them. They’ve played their whole lives — travel ball, high school — you name it they’ve done it,” she said.
“They’ve kind of groomed themselves for this spot. It’s disappointing for them too, to end it this way.”
But the future is bright, with at least six starters returning next spring, for Mohawk.
“We’ll keep it rolling. That’s kind of my intention of bringing up some of the girls I do at the end of the season. They need to come along for the ride and get the experience of being here and at this level of competition and just know that everything you do on the field does matter,” Walton said.
“We preach that day-in and day-out. Every single at-bat, every single ball that’s hit to you, it matters.”
