BUCYRUS — History was made here Thursday night with Wynford’s 11-1, five-inning victory over the Lady Redmen in a Northern 10 Athletic Conference contest.
Lady Royals coach Jamee Jennings said it was the first time that Wynford swept its neighbor in softball.
“Honestly, we said we were feeling it in our bones. This is the nicest day we’ve had to play.
“It feels pretty good. Coming over we told the girls that as far back as our records go this is the first time we beat them twice in one season,” Jennings said.
On April 16 Bucyrus fell victim to five errors, leading to six unearned runs and Wynford held on for a 9-8 home victory.
For Jennings, a former Bucyrus player, it was her first victory as a head coach on Jack Hewitt Field.
“When I was in college, I helped run Pudge’s summer program for five years before I got over at Wynford. It means a lot. There’s a tradition on this field and there’s a way that you play ball on this field. I challenged the girls,” she said.
“You know, the first couple innings we had some errors here and there and some pretty bad base running. Then we cleaned it up and went back to our roots, which is team ball. I felt like we really did that.”
The Lady Royals improve to 6-7 overall and 4-5 in the N10, while Bucyrus slips 0-9, 0-8.
Senior pitcher Maycie Morgan got the win on the mound for Wynford, striking out four and giving up just two hits.
The visitors got two runs in the top of the first without a ball leaving the infield. A field error and an infield single by Madalyn Johnson aided the cause.
Coach Jerry “Pudge” Hargis knows his team can play better.
“We’re young, starting four freshmen on the infield. We’ll come. We had a problem catching a fly ball today for some reason,” Hargis said.
“But we’re young and we know where we are at. The kids are having fun. We’re going to keep that up. I don’t know how many games we’re gonna win, but we are gonna have fun along the way.”
Trailing 3-0 the Lady Redmen plated a run in the fourth inning.
Sophomore Kendra Blizzard took the loss and yielded nine hits. She struck out three Royals batters.
“She’s pitched some innings but that’s the most innings she’s pitched all year. She did a great job. Our other girl (Ashley Davis) was at DECA and came back and pitched last night,” Hargis said.
“We got our catcher hurt. We’re scrambling around a little bit, but we’re not discouraged. These kids want to play. I like what they’re doing.”
The Lady Royals produced eight runs in the fifth to break open a close game.
Melanie Johnson doubled, Alexis Stevely singled and Johnson hit another two-bagger to drive in a pair of runs as Wynford sent 11 batters to the plate.
Seven of the eight runs scored in that inning came with two outs.
“We talk about that, and I think we’ve shown that throughout the year. We don’t roll over on ourselves. So even with two outs it’s a new at-bat, a new play. Let’s go get it,” Jennings said.
“Even our younger girls stepped up. I felt like one through 10, we used the flex today, they came ready to play; and our subs were ready to.”
Madalyn Johnson and Stevely also had hits, along with Reese McGuire and Autumn Shaffer, who doubled in the third.
Freshman Isabella Bruss had a single for Bucyrus.
Coming off 11-1 and 12-0 losses to Colonel Crawford, the win was a necessary one for Wynford.
“That Crawford team is tough, that’s for sure. We joke also that we’re running an MLB schedule right now. We are playing every single day all the way up until tournaments,” Jennings said.
The Lady Royals host Seneca East Friday and visit Galion on Saturday.
Hargis and Jennings formed a relationship while she wore a Bucyrus uniform.
“When I had Jamee in high school, we had a great relationship. She was our captain and took care of everything for me. She’s doing a great job with them.
“We’ve had some great players here and had some great times here. We’ve had good teams here and bad teams here. Ask Jamee, she was on a good team.”
