BUCYRUS — Though the start was delayed two hours, and the cool, windy conditions were less than ideal, the seven-team Jim Grandy Invitational Tennis Tournament was completed Saturday at the Bucyrus Community Tennis Courts.
It was a two-horse race for the championship with Ontario eventually edging Upper Sandusky, 15-14, for the title of the ninth annual event.
“I thought the tennis was very good this year,” Bucyrus tennis coach and tournament director John Supon said. “And it was an excellent finish to the invitational where the last match decided the team championship. I felt this year’s invitational had more competitive matches than in past years which made for a more exciting day of tennis.”
Ontario’s Pablo Sanchez Vidal won the first singles match over Upper Sandusky’s Owen Knapp to clinch the title. The Warriors had three first-place finishers, one third place and a fourth place to accumulate their 15 points.
The Rams had four seconds: Knapp (first singles), Holden Daris (second singles), Collin/Wines (first doubles) and Smith/Steele (second doubles) and on third, Aaron McGinn (third singles).
Galion’s four points came when Gimbel/Hollis won first doubles. Bucyrus scored its lone point on Jake Hamm’s fourth-place finish in first singles.
“I would like to thank the coaches and players for an excellent display of tennis and the patience that everyone displayed before the invite while were getting the courts ready,” Supon said. “I am so happy we were able to play today.”
