NEW WASHINGTON — Aiden McDougal came prepared to throw at his home track Thursday afternoon.
The senior won the shot put with a toss of 48 feet, 11 and 1/2 inches and hurled the discus to an event-best 145 feet, 5 inches in the Buckeye Central Stache Dash.
“I got a PR (personal record). It was going right into the wind. It’s not that big of a deal in the shot put,” McDougal said.
The shot put mark came within 7 and 3/4 inches of the meet record set by South Central’s Carson Kinney in 2016.
Last year McDougal qualified for regionals in the discus, and he’s used to working hard, also playing football and basketball.
“During basketball it wasn’t uncommon to have an hour-and-a-half practice or two-hour practice and then go throw and lift for another couple hours. I did some indoor meets over the winter on Sundays, and I tried to work in as many drills with any extra time I had.”
For good measure, McDougal finished fifth in the 100 meters in 12.07 seconds.
“Aiden’s having a great season. He’s finally getting healthy,” said Buckeye Central boys coach Joe Wiles. “You wouldn’t have known it by looking at him, but last year he fought through some sickness problems. This season everything’s working.”
Seneca East boys and Port Clinton girls took team honors under sunny, but windy, conditions. Colonel Crawford girls finished second and its boys placed third.
“We’re having a lot of fun,” Tigers boys coach Ed Phillips said.
“With the meets we’ve had the kids have run well. We hope to be pretty well rounded. We’ve got pretty good distance back, sprinters back, field events back. It’s an exciting team.”
Phillips expects his relay teams to do well this spring. The 4X100 team placed first, edging Port Clinton by 0.37 seconds.
Sophomore Brycen Lantz took second in the 3200 meters, clocking 11:03.93.
“It’s nice to be in an invite and let everybody compete individually and see how they stack up,” Phillips said. “We’re probably not gonna have a lot of PRs with this wind. But the temperature is nice.”
One meet record was set by a familiar Colonel Crawford standout.
Senior Carter Valentine broke the meet record in the long jump as the Eagle soared 21 feet, 9.75 inches to break the mark previously held by Willard’s Dorian Holiday (20 feet, 11.25 inches) in 2018.
Other area placers include:
· Colonel Crawford’s Trevor Vogt won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.22.
· Mira Holt won the girls 400 meters in 1:01.75 helping the Lady Eagles to its second-place finish.
· Sophomore Lilly Schiefer of Seneca East won the girls 1600 meters in 5:41.48 with Mohawk’s Kaylynn Maybee placing third in 6:12.58.
· Ethan Colt took second for CC in the 400 meters in 54.79 seconds, with Seneca East’s Emerson Brown third in 55.13.
· Austin Perry of Seneca East was second (44.44 seconds) and Crawford’s Matt Clinard was third (46.27) in the boys 300-meter hurdles.
· Lilly Schiefer took the girls 1600 in 5:41.48 and second in the 800 in 2:38.44.
· Colonel Crawford girls 4X400 relay took first in 4:26.26.
· Colonel Crawford’s Ayla McKibben grabbed third in the girls 200 meters in 29.44.
· Luke Hicks of Seneca East placed third in the shot (125 feet, 11 inches).
· In the girls’ long jump, Hailey Slagle of Colonel Crawford was second (15-04.50); Makenna Depinet of Seneca East third (15-01.75) and Mira Holt fourth (15-00.25).
· Amelia Boes of Seneca East was third in the girls shot put, throwing 30 feet, 8 and 1/4 inches.
· In the boys 100 meters, Dylan Young of Seneca East took second in 11.78 and Colonel Crawford’s Lincoln Mollenkopf third in 12.02.
Wiles was pleased with the meet and Mother Nature’s cooperation.
“For the weather we’ve had this spring, which has been awful, we’ll take the sun and no rain. A couple of my kids did PR in some of the field events,” Wiles said.
“Both teams have been great to work with; lots of senior leadership especially on the guys’ side. We got a good group of freshmen that are working really hard and will be good athletes once they continue to grow.”
Wiles said there is experimentation on the girls’ side, under coach Thad Metzger.
“We’ve tried all kind of relays. We’re pretty small on the girls’ side, so we got sprinters running 800s and all kinds of stuff trying to find what works best for us.”
Mohawk coaches Brock and Sunshine Cleveland are optimistic about the Warriors’ chances.
“This is our third meet of the year. We’re relatively small with 10 boys and 10 girls. We’re trying to piece some things together. Zaiden Fry has won two meets in the pole vault. He’s sprinting today since there’s no pole vault,” Brock said.
“Trenton Horner has been doing good distance-wise. Our daughter, Kennedy Cleveland, has been one of our better sprinters so far. Kaylynn Maybee and Addy Horner are doing well distance-wise.”
Maybee turned in a time of 6:12.58 in the 1600 meters, good for third place.
Sunshine noted the team has shown its flexibility.
“They are really stepping up and maybe doing things that they’ve not done in the past. They’re really good about doing that and coming together so we can field multiple relays and every spot we can,” she said.
“They’re willing to try anything we put them in. You never know. Someone might shine in an event they didn’t expect.”
