A great deal of learning takes place every day in the classroom. Sometimes, there are educational lessons that are strengthened and enhanced outside the classroom. The Bucyrus Elementary School first grade students recently had the opportunity to enjoy a unique learning experience at Sycamore Run Farms.
The purpose of the field trip was for students to learn the needs of living things. They also learned foods and materials that are produced on the farm.
“Many students have never been on a farm,” first grade teacher Kim Makeever said. “This field trip gave them an opportunity to see real animals, a combine and participate in hands on activities involving plants and animals. They even made homemade butter!”
Students went on a nature hike where they learned about the different types of trees that can be found in Crawford County during the visit. They also walked through a corn maze and learned fun facts about agriculture.
“I am extremely proud of our first grade teachers for finding a unique learning experience for their students outside the classroom at Sycamore Run Farms,” Associate Principal Timothy Souder. “This kind of activity is another example of the customized and personalized education our staff strives to provide each and every student in our building.”
Funding for the field trip was provided through a mini-grant from the Bucyrus City Schools Educational Foundation. The mini-grant covered the costs associated with the trip for the students and teachers.
