BUCYRUS—The citizens of Bucyrus welcomed 2022 with a symbol near and dear to the community.
The 10ft long fiberglass bratwurst sandwich was designed as part of the Bucyrus Bicentennial celebration officially celebrated in May. This final touch on New Year’s Eve was dubbed Bucyrus’ version of the annual New York Times Square Ball. The dropping of the Bratwurst will now be an annual tradition.
The countdown to the new year was hosted by Doug Foght and Kevin Myers. The Bratwurst was lowered to a cheering crowd at Shines Art Park.
It took two Bucyrus Fire Department trucks to hoist the sandwich 100 feet in the air for the first annual “Brat Drop.”
On the other side of town, at the Loft in Pickwick Place, the Bicentennial Commission held its formal Gala emceed by local Cartoonist and Comedian Earl Musick. The event had to be postponed last year due to Covid. Guests enjoyed dining and dancing. There were raffles and an auction for a painting completed by local artist Tina Husted as well as a live auction featuring other historical items. The Mid-Ohio Jazz Orchestra from Mansfield stepped in to play music for the event.
