As the fall sports season draws to a close, the Bucyrus City Schools is taking time to recognize student-athlete success in the classroom. The Bucyrus Athletics department, in cooperation with the Bucyrus Academic Booster Club, will be recognizing the 2014 Fall Sports Scholar-Athletes during the final home football game Oct. 31.
In order to earn this distinction, Bucyrus student-athletes must achieve and maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average during the first quarter of the 2014-2015 school year.
“This was an idea generated last year that came out of a discussion regarding fundraising for our scholarships,” Academic Booster Club member Amy Plumley said. “Our plan is to recognize these student-athletes through a series of announcements, highlighting the academic accomplishments of our students.”
In addition to student-athlete recognition, the final home football game is serving as a fundraiser for Bucyrus Academic Booster Club student scholarships. The Athletic Department will be donating $1 of each ticket purchased directly to the Academic Booster Club.
“We needed something consistent that could generate money to be used for scholarships that we award each year,” Plumley said. “Sadly, academic events do not usually bring in a large crowd like athletic events. We approached the administration about a portion of the ticket sales on a designated night going to support academic scholarships, and we agreed to one football game and two basketball games for this initiative.”
The final home football game stands to be extremely important to the Redmen and their league title and post-season play expectations. The Athletic Department will be offering pre-sale tickets for the game Oct. 31. Tickets for the Copper Kettle game Friday night will be available for purchase in the Athletic Director’s office at the High School all week from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., beginning Tuesday, Oct. 28. Adult tickets are $6 each and student tickets are $5 each, with $1 of each ticket sold being donated to the Bucyrus Academic Booster Club.
“The athletic accomplishments of our student-athletes are well documented, but their achievements in the classroom are often overlooked,” Bucyrus Superintendent Kevin Kimmel said. “We have many outstanding students in our district, and this program will bring more attention to the performance of Bucyrus students in the classroom. I hope the entire Bucyrus City Schools family will join me Friday to watch our Redmen bring the Copper Kettle back to BHS and show our support for the Academic Booster Club and the academic accomplishments of our students.”
