BUCYRUS—The Bucyrus Tree Commission is planning a special event on Veterans day this Thursday, November 11, 2021, at 11 AM.

One hundred years ago, on November 11, 1921, at 11 AM, an American Elm tree was planted at the Veterans Memorial at the intersection of Crawford Street, West Mansfield street, and West Mary street in memory of the Unknown Soldier who was buried at that time in the Tomb of the Unknown at Arlington National Cemetery.

That American Elm succumbed to disease many years ago, and now a new tree, a shingle oak, will be planted in its place by members of the Tree Commission, area students, and Veterans to honor those who have served our country.

The planting of the shingle oak tree will symbolize the gratitude that our community has for our Veterans who have unselfishly and courageously served our country.

The event will be held at 11 AM, which will be exactly 100 years to the date and time that the original Dedication Ceremony took place both at the Tomb of the Unknown and our local Veterans Monument. The public is invited to the ceremony to show gratitude for our Veterans. All Veterans in attendance will receive a commemorative Bucyrus Bicentennial pin courtesy of the Bicentennial Committee.
