The county hasn’t gone to the dogs quite yet but the local humane society is making sure it is able to do what is needed to take care of the area’s pet population.

Victoria Carmean, director of the Humane Society Serving Crawford County, and Tricia Breighner, president of the Humane Society, met with the Crawford County Commissioners Tuesday for their annual meeting. Representatives from the humane society meet annually with the commissioners to reevaluate their memorandum of understanding and discuss any further funding needed.

Currently, the county pays rent to the Humane Society for the kennels used by the county dog warden, though it is not paid for with tax dollars. Carmean said they discussed increasing the amount of rent paid to help balance the increase in the shelter’s overall operating expenses.

Carmean noted that they also need to replace the crematorium unit, which is used by the Humane Society and the dog warden. The unit costs $90,000. Carmean said they already have half of the cost available but they were looking for additional grants to help offset the price.

“It’s always good to be able to sit down with them,” Carmean said of the meeting. She felt that it allows the commissioners to show their appreciation for what the Humane Society does for the county.
