BUCYRUS—On Wednesday evening, the Wynford board of education held their regular monthly meeting.

At the meeting, elementary reading coordinator Rebecca Prenger and elementary tutor Lynne Fisher gave a presentation to the board on how summer school went.

Wynford’s elementary summer school began on July 12 and ended on August 12 and had sixty-two students in attendance. Those who attended summer school were referred by teachers and included students who were not on track with iReady math and reading and who were not making adequate growth. The students in attendance needed to commit to at least three weeks, though many stayed for the whole time.

The program was five days a week from 9-1, and focused on small group reading, math groups, iReady, writing, science, and social studies extension, and featured weekly field trips and guest speakers.

Some of the field trips the elementary kids went on were to the Bucyrus Public Library, the Bucyrus Fire Department, the Crawford County Fair, and Lowe Volk Park. Two of the speakers were Victoria from the Crawford County Humane Society and Krista Richmond, who taught the kids cake decorating.

Each day, students would spend one hour on reading, one hour on math, and a forty-minute flex time on science, social studies, or writing. The program resulted in the needed growth for many of the students in attendance.

The school is looking to use ESSER III money, once approved, to keep the summer school program going through the 2024 school year.

In the open board discussion section of the meeting, board president Debbi Gifford presented a list of improvements she would like to see made to school grounds now that the renovation process is winding down. Her list included finishing up the practice field, a first-class football and track stadium to go along with the new building, a button-up north walkway between the two buildings, and switching the students from Google Classrooms to Microsoft.

Board member Scott Langenderfer said that improvements he would like to see are looking into switching from the North Central Ohio Educational Service Center to the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center, and texts or notices being sent out to parents when there are sub bus drivers that could cause a delay in pickup times in the morning.

Other suggestions were moving the gas tanks, which are being looked into and moving the dumpsters out of the way.

Tami Burgess new second grade teacher

Also, at the meeting, a new second-grade teacher, Tami Burgess, was hired out of Northmor. When asked how her time at Wynford was going so far, she stated that she felt like she was at home within the school district.

As of right now, the school will be hosting a normal homecoming dance for its high school students on October 2. Masks are currently recommended but not required.

For the past two weeks, superintendent Fred Fox has been posting a COVID update at 4:30. The school is currently at about a twelve percent absentee rate for the middle and high schools. To keep track of the school’s COVID numbers, you can follow this link.

The next regularly scheduled board meeting is October 21 at 5:30 p.m.
