GALION—Galion Police are investigating the death of a man found near the CSX railroad tracks, south of the railroad crossing on Sherman Street.

According to a press release from Galion Police Chief Brian Saterfield, officers responded to the area at around 2:07 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon and found the man to be deceased and lying in the tree-lined area just east of the tracks.

The crime scene unit of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) was called to the scene to process the area.

“We also received assistance from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, the Crestline Police Department, the CSX Police Department and the Crawford County Prosecutor’s Office,” said Saterfield.

Officers have identified the man as Joseph Gerster, 46, of Galion, but the cause of death has not yet been determined. An autopsy is being performed by the Lucas County Coroner’s Office as ordered by the Crawford County Coroner.

The case remains under investigation.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Mr. Gerster,” said Saterfield.
