BUCYRUS — The 55th annual Bill Rahm Invitational Bowling Tournament got underway on Saturday, featuring the top 16 average bowlers in men’s leagues at Suburban Lanes.

In the opening round, Skip Heimlich defeated Brock Lykens, 859-804, Dave Shock edged Don McLaughlin, 1009-950, Joe Powers beat Shawn Ridgeway, 870-808 and Curtis Groves dropped Phil Gabel, 970-791.

Butch Pangallo bested Joel Butt, 869-832, Mike Lear beat Rick McWaters, 964-832, Jo Metz slipped past Steve Entenmann, 771-724, and Tod Spurlock, Jr. defeated Charles Yancey, 795-732.

On Sunday, the field was cut in half, with eight bowlers being eliminated.

In the winners’ bracket, Metz defeated Spurlock, 934-778, Groves got past Heimlich 890-804, Shock beat Powers 859-811, and Lear knocked off Pangallo 954-736.

In the first round of the losers’ bracket, Entenmann beat Yancey 892-617, Gabel squeezed by Lykens 843-828, McLaughlin defeated Ridgeway 890-863, and McWaters topped Butt 938-818.

Yancey, Lykens, Ridgeway, and Butt were eliminated.

In the second round, Heimlich beat McLaughlin 942-828, Powers edged Gabel 876-861, Pangallo bested Entenmann 915-886, and McWaters dropped Spurlock 838-686.

McLaughlin, Gabel, Entenmann, and Spurlock dropped from the field.

The tournament continues Saturday with two matches in the winners’ bracket and two in the losers’ bracket.

In the winners’ bracket, Jo Metz will take on Dave Shock and Mike Lear faces Curtis Groves. In the losers’ bracket, Butch Pangallo and Skip Heimlich square off and Rick McWaters will bowl Joe Powers.

The tournament will begin at 1 p.m. back at Suburban Lanes.
