BUCYRUS – Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Michael D. Smith has been selected as the 2020 Bucyrus Post Trooper of the Year. The selection of Trooper Smith is in recognition of his outstanding service during 2020 at the Bucyrus Post. Fellow troopers stationed at the Bucyrus Post chose Trooper Smith based on his leadership abilities, professional ethics, courteous, treatment of others, enthusiastic work attitude, and cooperation with supervisors, peers, and the public. Trooper Smith joined the Patrol in 2011 and has served at the Bucyrus and Marion posts. He is a lifelong resident of Upper Sandusky and a graduate of Upper Sandusky High School. Prior to becoming a state trooper, he also served in the United States Army. Other Patrol awards Trooper Smith received in the past include the Health and Physical Fitness Award, Safe Driving Award, the ACE award in auto\larceny, and the Criminal Patrol Award. Trooper Smith, his wife, Erin, and their three children reside in Wyandot County.
