CAREY — Over the last two years, Carey has controlled the Wynford Royals.

A year ago, the Blue Devils dominated the Royals, 45-7. And two years ago, Carey knocked Wynford out of the playoffs, 7-2.

Wynford quarterback Dustin Brady never forgot about those two losses.

Brady rushed for four touchdowns and passed for another one as the Royals dominated Carey, 42-10, Friday night in Carey.

With the win, the Royals improved to 4-1 in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference, 5-3 overall, and stayed in a first-place tie with Seneca East. Carey fell to 3-2 in the conference, 3-5 overall.

Brady said he remembered those two losses to the Blue Devils.

“It’s such a great win, considering how they played us the last two years,” Brady said. “Coming back and finally getting that win, it felt so nice.”

The Royals scored touchdowns on their first four possessions of the game, and Brady made some big plays in the passing game, hitting running back Cody Taylor for 52 and 43 yards in separate possessions. He also hit Lucas Hackworth for 73 yards in the game’s first possession, setting up Wynford’s first score.

“They made some big plays,” Carey coach Jonathon Mershman said. “That number 11 (Taylor), he’s fast. He’s a good running back. I think he’s a junior and that kind of sucks for me. I have to see him again next year. He got loose out of the backfield for some big plays and they took advantage of that. We didn’t do a very good job of tackling, either.”

Wynford coach Gabe Helbert said that the big plays were key.

“We made big plays in the pass game, Dustin was very crisp tonight,” Helbert said. “He was crisp all week. I thought he did a great job, just mental preparation and made big throws at key times.

“That was the big thing early on,” Helbert added. “We made big plays in the pass game and we did a great job of running the ball. I’m very proud of our kids in all three phases, really.”

The Royals opened the scoring with a two-yard run from Brady, but the Blue Devils responded with a 20-yard field goal from Anthony Bell, cutting the lead to 7-3.

Wynford took control of the game in the second quarter, as Brady scored on an eight-yard run, before hitting Hackworth from eight yards out to take a 21-3 lead.

Carey was able to cut the lead with seven seconds left in the half on a two-yard run, making it 21-10 at the break.

In the third period, Brady scored again from three yards out, and the Royals took a 28-10 lead into the final frame.

Brady scored again from 18 yards out in the fourth period before Seth Benedict picked up a 36-yard fumble recovery for a score.

Brady rushed for 77 yards on 13 carries and completed six of nine passes for 194 yards and a score.

“The offensive line, they did everything,” Brady said. “They were workhorses tonight.

“On offense, we always start slow. Now, it’s just right at it. Right from the outset, we’re on it. It’s been such a great help.”

Mershman said that Brady was the difference.

“He ran a little bit and he threw some really nice balls,” Mershman said. “They played good. They played really, really good. They are a sound coached team. You’re going to have that.”

“We feel that we have a good amount of guys that can make plays,” Helbert said. “Cody and Dustin are guys that are keys to our offense. Dustin, from a pass and run standpoint, was excellent and Cody did a great job of catching the football, as well as running it. We had great performances by people in all three phases.”
