Philip Sherman, born to Walter and Jenny Sherman on April 9, 1934, was a very happy man who was married to the love of his life for 56 years, Claudine (Massingill) Sherman. Philip was born in Galion, Ohio, was raised in Iberia, Ohio, and then lived in Whetstone Township the remainder his life. His siblings were: Helen Mullinix, Ellen Mullinix, Sandra (Daniel) Dauchenbaugh, and Wilbert (Rachel) Sherman. Although he never graduated high school, he was a math and science wizard. He loved to invent and play; he could turn anything into a toy. The perfect gift for him was something that moved and/or lit up; he was easily entertained that way. He was a God loving, bird feeding, card cheating, harmonica playing, joke telling, trumpet tooting, fisherman that enjoyed life to its fullest. He turned everything into a song and was always singing a tune of some sorts. His favorite job, after retiring from Peabody Galion, was that of a greeter at Walmart. The one thing he asked for in his afterlife was a Walmart he could visit.
Many believed him to be a baby whisperer; he had a gift. He lit up when babies were around. Maybe that is why he raised 7 children of his own. Those who call him dad are; Cecil (Ronda) Sherman, Keith Sherman, Blaine Sherman, Wayne (Teresa) Sherman, Melissa (Michael) Motter-his favorite (you get to do this when you write the obituary), Leanna (Greg) Hershey, and Darris (Shannon) Sherman. Those who call him Grandpa are: Nikki, Chelsea, Taylor, Josiah, Christina, Shelia, Jessica, Brian, Kevin, Blaine Jr., Tasha, Caleb, Philip, Claudia, Nic, Jordan, Paige, Casey, Alex, Raye, Dre, Kyle, Travis and Lily (there are also many others out there that have, and do, call him grandpa). Many of his grandchildren also have babies so his legacy will live on forever.
His favorite song was a hymn, ‘In the Garden’ by C. Austin Miles. A few of the lyrics are; “And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own…and the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known” – His family had the privilege of saying good bye, quietly, to him at his house during the night of July 22. His tender smile and quirky sense of humor will be missed by all that knew him.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2019 at the Gospel Baptist Church, 5670 State Rt. 19, Galion, Ohio 44833 where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27 with Rev. Lou Boston and Rev. Kenneth Massingill officiating. Burial will follow at Iberia Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to HomeCare Matters Hospice in care of the funeral home.
