A Public Meeting will be held on Monday, June 8th from 6pm to 8pm at the Fellowship Hall, Peace Lutheran Church located on 123 W. Walnut Street, Galion to gather community input to develop a vision for the future of the Galion Big Four Depot.
City consultant, Wendy Zucal, who will conduct the meeting shares that “This is an effort on behalf of the City of Galion to bring people together to gain public input and identify resources to create an overall vision and goal for the Depot.” Zucal stressed that all ideas are welcome and no reservations are needed to attend.
Built in 1900, the Depot was once the division headquarters for the Cleveland, Chicago, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railroad, boasting 32 trains a day during its heyday.
The Big Four Depot, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is owned by the City and positioned to once again become an important part of downtown Galion.
Galion Mayor Tom O’Leary added “The City of Galion has been the owner of the Depot for more than ten years and the time is long overdue for city government and interested community members to come up with a financially responsible redevelopment plan. I’m very excited about forming a group that is focused on creating and acting on a plan.”
As part of this effort, participants are encouraged to bring photographs of the Depot’s interior, exterior, and surrounding rail yards to the Public Meeting. Photographs will be scanned and returned to their owners. They will be used for preservation purposes.
