The City of Bucyrus condemned a building on West Mansfield Street Tuesday morning.

The assessment of the building located at 209 West Mansfield St. began when the city received a report that popping and cracking could be heard in the three-story structure. Though the city had known the building was in bad shape, Zoning Administrator John Rostash believed the serious damage occurred recently.

condemned building at 209 W. Mansfield St. 04-07-15 (1)“We had the fire department cordon off the area in case it did collapse,” Rostash said. “You can tell the foundation is in very bad shape . . . the roof has fallen in to the structure.”

The most condemning evidence came when Lieutenant John Schiefer of the Bucyrus Fire Department said his crew secured the scene after they discovered the walls starting to buckle. Electricity and other utilities were shut off. No one had been residing in the building at the time.

Bucyrus Law Director Rob Ratliff and Rostash issued a notice of condemnation and Rostash later posted an order to demolish the property.

The owner of the property, Ronald Worchester of Indian Valley Properties, has 60 days to demolish the building.
